Coming to an Open Floor class for the first time?

What to wear:

  • Loose, comfortable clothes allowing for getting warm and cool, layers work best.

  • No outdoor use shoes - bare feet or indoor dance shoes (socks are usually too slippery to move safely).

What to bring:

  • Refillable water bottle.

What to expect:

  • Time to warm up and arrive at the beginning of the session - to move, stretch, feel your way into your body in your own way. I’ll offer some gentle suggestions and you’ll see people moving in all sorts of ways - as you will throughout the class - there’s no right or wrong way to move in Open Floor, only your way - your body and your dance.

  • Each session will have a theme and I will give some guided input in the first part of the session - including invitations to bring awareness to different parts of your body and move in ways that may be less familiar, to introduce new possibilities of movement.

  • Often I’ll suggest partnering or moving in small groups with other people, this is optional as with all my guidance, and I do encourage you to try - most people are self-consicious about dancing with others and it can bring out new movements and be a valuable way to learn about yourself in relationship on and off the dance floor.

  • All guidance is invitational, you are welcome to follow or not as suits your body. How you move and the level of energy and flexibility is up to you - each of our bodies is different and I encourage you to move within your own comfortable limits, taking into account any injuries or health conditions you may be experiencing.

  • Time to dance without input - where you can follow your own dance over half an hour or more. This is time to follow any themes that have arisen for you during the session and to allow your body to move freely, express and shape your experience.

  • Closing of the session - sometimes speaking with one or two other people if you’d like to about your dance, then usually finishing with a final circle and time for a few people to speak if they wish in the larger group.

  • All classes are usually with music, which will rise and fall in tempo over the course of the session and is a mix of many different kinds of music genres, from world to classical to contemporary - curated together into a soundscape which reflects the theme and explorations of the session. If you’d like to hear the kinds of music I play, you can listen to my soundscapes on Mixcloud here.
